Northwest Chinese School (NWCS) offers comprehensive Simplified Chinese language and Chinese culture education for students from Pre-K to 12th grade. The school year runs from September to June, with in-person classes held every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (excluding holidays). In addition, online classes are available every Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 5:50 PM.
The “YOUER HANYU” textbook series consists of four volumes. Through systematic learning and practice, young children develop essential listening and speaking skills in Chinese, learn to correctly write basic Chinese strokes, and recognize characters introduced in the textbooks. The curriculum helps foster children’s interest and habits in speaking Chinese and writing characters.
At NWCS, we currently use Books 1 and 2 of Preschool Chinese for our Preschool classes, and Books 3 and 4 for Pre-Kindergarten classes.
For students: Children aged 4–5 years old

Starting in** Grade 1**, NWCS offers carefully designed instructional tracks based on students’ home language background and Chinese proficiency. We use a variety of textbooks, including Chinese Made Easy, American Chinese, and Ma Liping Chinese, to ensure that each student learns effectively and happily in an environment tailored to their needs.
Chinese Made Easy

“Chinese Made Easy ” is a textbook series specifically designed for students whose native language is English. The topics are carefully selected to align with students' interests and are organized according to the principles of second language acquisition. The series is divided into two parts:
Chinese Made Easy For Kids (Books 1–4): for students in Grades 1–4.
Chinese Made Easy Third Edition (Books 1–6): for students in Grades 5–12.
For Students:
Students in Grades 1–12 who lack a Chinese-speaking environment at home and have limited access to outside tutoring.
Course Goals:
Recognize Pinyin and commonly used Chinese characters
Learn basic vocabulary and simple dialogues through text, images, situational conversations, games, and competitions
Cultivate an interest in learning the Chinese language while gaining an understanding of Chinese culture, customs, and history

American Chinese
The American Chinese / MeiZhou curriculum emphasizes the comprehensive development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It integrates three modes of communication, the theory of multiple intelligences, and adheres to the “5Cs” of foreign language education: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.
For Students:
Students in Grades 1–12 who have some Chinese foundation but limited exposure to a Chinese-speaking environment at home.
Course Goals:
Expand vocabulary and master practical sentence patterns
Improve daily communication and listening comprehension
Develop reading comprehension and writing skills
Build confidence and interest in learning Chinese
Encourage participation in related activities and projects

Ma-Li-Ping Chinese
"Ma Liping Chinese" is specifically designed for students from overseas Chinese-speaking families. Our school currently uses Books 1 through 4. Each textbook consists of three volumes with corresponding single- and double-week workbooks, flashcards for students, and online assignments. Upon completing these four volumes, students are expected to be able to fluently recognize approximately 1,500 commonly used Chinese characters and write around 500 of the most frequently used characters, enabling them to form over 1,000 common vocabulary words.

Direct recognition of words before learning pinyin (introduced in 4th grade)
Emphasis on recognizing words first and then writing them; recognize more, write less

This course is designed to prepare high school students for the AP Chinese Exam. The textbook, "Harvest: Intermediate Chinese", consists of 6 units (12 chapters) covering a wide range of cultural topics such as school, family, food, sports, festivals, customs, travel, famous people, history, literature, and art. It is an ideal choice for AP Chinese or other intermediate-level Chinese courses.
For Students:
High school students who have completed MeiZhou Chinese Book 9.
